One event on March 3, 2024 at 1:30 pm

Professional Tour Guide and Unity congregant Russ Norfleet has offered to host walking tours of two DC neighborhoods. The first tour will be of the U Street/Shaw area – which is the neighborhood where our spiritual home is located. The 2nd neighborhood is the Southwest Waterfront. Join Russ as he takes you on an informative walking tour highlighting the history of these District of Columbia neighborhoods, natural areas, and the African American history and Civil War sites. While Russ will not charge for the tours – he will graciously accept a suggested love offering of $20.

U Street/Shaw
Date: Sunday, February 25, 2024
Time: 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Meet: Outside entrance to U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro Station, 10th Street south of U Street

We will explore the neighborhood around Unity of Washington, DC – U Street/Shaw. Learn more about the “shakers and movers” in the arts, civil rights, education, law, and science who lived in the neighborhood and its eclectic mix of housing and commercial buildings, see the childhood homes of Duke Ellington and venues where he, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn, and other entertainers performed. From 1900 through the mid-20th century, U Street was the heart of African-American business and culture in Washington.

Southwest Waterfront DC
Date: Sunday, March 3, 2024
Time: 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Meet: Outside entrance to Waterfront Metro Station, 399 M Street SW

Experience the old and the new in Southwest. Much of the working-class neighborhood was razed in the 1950s to create something new in one of the nation’s first urban renewal experiments. Now the neighborhood is a mixture of mid-20th century multistory and townhouse residential communities, row houses and apartments, recently constructed mixed-use projects, green space, and historic and cultural sites. We will explore the neighborhood and learn how it became the mix of land uses and people you see today.

Two-hour tours
Distance:  One and a half to two miles
