The church, now known as Unity of Washington, DC, was founded on November 14, 1920 as the Unity Society of Washington, DC. Since its inception, the church has undergone changes in its name, leadership and location, with services held throughout the District of Columbia and two interrelated centers operating during the 1930s and 1940s.  However throughout its history, Unity of Washington DC has maintained a commitment to sharing practical, spiritual tools for individuals to become empowered to improve themselves and the world around them.
